The Great Mage S.L. MacGregor Mathers founded the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn's Rosicrucian Inner Order, the Rosae Rubeae et Aurea Crucis in 1892. According to Mathers, he founded the R.R. et A.C. using materials from the mysterious "Secret Chiefs of the Third Order," whom Mathers claimed to have met in person during his sojourn in Paris in 1891.

The central symbol of the Golden Dawn's Rosicrucian Inner Order is the Vault of the Adepti, based on the legend of the tomb of the founder of the Rosicrucian movement, Christian Rosenkreutz (Frater CRC). The founding document of the historical Rosicrucian movement, the Fama Fraternitatis, speaks of the discovery of the tomb of the Rosicrucian founder as follows:

"While repairing a part of the building of the College of the Holy Spirit, he endeavored to remove a brass memorial tablet which bore the names of certain brethren, and some other things. In this tablet was the head of a strong nail or bolt, so that when the tablet was forcibly wrenched away it pulled with it a large stone which thus partially uncovered a secret door, upon which was inscribed in large letters Post CXX Annos Patebo -- After an hundred and twenty years I shall open ...
... Now as yet we had not seen the dead body of our careful and wise father, we therefore removed the Altar aside, there we lifted up a strong plate of brass, and found a fair and worthy body, whole and unconsumed, as the same is here lively counterfeited, with all the Ornaments and Attires; in his hand he held a parchment book, called T."

The Golden Dawn community received wonderful news last month when Jean-Pascal Ruggiu, former Imperator of the Ahathoor Temple No. 7 in Paris, reentered the Golden Dawn, exercising the power in him vested by his traditional Golden Dawn warrant, assuming the mantel of Praemonstrator of Ahathoor Temple No. 7 in Paris, the office once held by Marquis Nicholas Tereshenko and earlier by S.L. MacGregor Mathers.

Last week, the Ahathoor Temple No 7 in Paris rocked the Magickal community with yet again with another bomb shell:

"GH Praemonstrator Jean-Pascal Ruggiu of Ahathoor Temple No. 7 announced his discovery in Paris the hidden tomb of Golden Dawn founder, S.L. MacGregor Mathers!"

Tomb of the Golden Dawn's Rosicrucian Founder,
S.L. MacGregor Mathers (1854-1918)

Considering the importance of the Vault of the Adepti to the Golden Dawn and of the Tomb of the Founder, Christian Rosenkreutz, to the entire Rosicrucian movement, the discovery of the tomb of the Golden Dawn's Rosicrucian founder, S.L. MacGregor Mathers (nearly 120 years after his death), is an event of unparalleled Rosicrucian and magickal importance.

For this article I interviewed GH Praemonstrator Ruggiu (7=4) regarding his discovery of Mathers' tomb. Here is what he had to say:
"Together with Nicolas Tereschenko we conducted a great deal of research into public records and cemeteries in Paris, but without success in finding Mathers' tomb. I continued my research for many years. Most recently, I sought and obtained permission to visit various private cemeteries in Paris.
It was in once such private cemetery that I finally discovered our Mathers' tomb. When I finally stood in front of the tomb of the founder of our order, it was amazing! The only feeling like this I have ever had was the first time I entered the Vault of the Adepti, like standing before the tomb of Christian Rosenkreutz.
I could not believe that I finally found it ! And the grave was so beautiful, filled with Golden Dawn symbols - The sun rising over the ocean made in mosaic - and even the Celtic cross above. There is also a mysterious inscription that I still can not decipher. It might even be in the Celtic language. I will publish my findings once I finally succeed to identify the script and translate the inscription. For the moment, I am keeping the location of the tomb secret, as there are so many quarrels on the Internet and people are acting so crazy in the Golden Dawn community."
When I met Jean-Pascal Ruggiu in 1995, he served as Imperator of Ahathoor Temple No. 7 in Paris, while Marquis Nicholas Terescheko served as Praemonstrator. This historic meeting signaled the beginning not only of an abiding friendship, but also of an important initiatic relationship, as GH Frater Ruggiu initiated me into the higher grades of the R.R. et A.C. When in 1997, GH Frater Ruggiu initiated me into the Adeptus Exemptus (7=4) grade, he invested me not only with various Golden Dawn and Rosicrucian lineages held by the Ahathoor Temple, but also a vast array of Gnostic lineages while consecrating me to the episcopate. Thanks to Jean-Pascal Ruggiu and Dr. Robert Word, today I one of but a handful of Pagan Gnostic Bishops. For all of this, I shall remain forever grateful.

The Athathoor Temple No. 7 of Paris today operates as an independent and autonomous, traditional Golden Dawn order under the authority of GH Praemonstrator Jean-Pascal Ruggiu (7=4), in formal amity with our order, the European headquartered Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn®.

Lesson Seven:

"How should the Golden Dawn System of Magic ...
... affect my view of the world?"

The Golden Dawn does not influence the world view of the aspirant, but rather gives the Magician an entirely new vision and understanding. This occurs through direct, personal experience and verification of the Inner, Spiritual Planes, and through contact with other non-corporeal forms of intelligence.

The existence of inner laws that are not at all unlike the laws of commonly known physics, lead to verify that material human life as we know it is but a profound illusion which is self-constructed by means of the five senses. Therefore the previous, limited view of the world, is transformed through enlarged vision, including all of the planes of creation, rather than merely the physical one - All of this with personal proof gained through direct experience obtained using the magical practices, etc.

Lesson One:

"What is the main purpose or goal...
...of the Golden Dawn System of Magic?"

"What are G.D. Magicians trying to accomplish?"

The main purpose and objective of the Golden Dawn system of Magic is the emergence into full consciousness of the Divine Spark that lies within each of us, which is stifled by contemporary education and by life experience reliant exclusively on the senses. Magicians seek to complete their energetic evolution in their lifetime, described by the Golden Dawn as:

"To become more than human!"

In the beginning, much wisdom can be gained through critical thinking about Magick; posing good questions, reflecting upon them, and at length discovering answers for one's self. Ultimately, Magick is a journey of Self-discovery. although Magickal training provides the skills needed to unleash the dormant powers of the Soul.

I invite you to begin exploring Core Golden Dawn concepts with me by reflecting upon the following questions.

What does it really mean ...

"to be human?"

What does it truly mean ...

"to become more than human?"

Secret Chiefs Reveal Hidden Nature of Golden Dawn Grades

Frater Lux E Tenebris
special envoy of the
Secret Chiefs
of the
Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn®
(EU OHIM reg. 000063925)

I have been asked by the Council of 12 Magi of our august Order, to write about the traditional meaning and true initiatic function of the three degrees of the Second Order of the Golden Dawn (R.R. et A.C.).
The three Adept grades incorporated in the Rosicrucain Tradition are actually re-elaborations of extremely ancient mysteries that have always accompanied humankind since the beginning of its appearance on this earth.
Human beings are born and live with the passing of their lives and the approach of death ever present before our eyes. The birth, life, death and resurrection of the plant world did not escape the careful eye of the ancients. They wondered why it is that what happened in the plant world did not also happen in the world of animals and human beings. The ancients observed that, from the seed of grain was grain reborn, as were human beings from human seed, even if diverse.
In this perfecting the knowledge of nature, the ancients noticed also that the Sun was likewise born, died and was reborn - as was the moon, and as the heavens presented the stars and the planets. In fact, everything in life spoke of this cycle of birth, death and resurrection. It did not take long for the ancients to realize that every law they observed was the same for every thing that could ever be discovered or comprehended.
The Universe is order from chaos and therefore is subject to precise laws that are inviolable and eternal. The universe has two properties: eternity and infinity. The Universe is infinite, as it contains everything that exists. The Universe is eternal, as visible material expression of Beingness.
The Universe, within itself, is mutable and cyclical. The elements contained within the Universe therefore transform into infinite gradations of matter and energy, and this movement, evolution or devolution leads to the creation of Time.
Humankind is a creation of the Universe - and human beings within themselves contain all three of the preceding kingdoms; mineral, vegetable, and animal. Moreover, in human beings Soul, Mind, and Consciousness manifest, being that which makes us human.
As human beings, we notice that our bodies are born, live, and die. By analogical observation, which is the cornerstone upon which all of Magic rests, we discover that our bodies are subject to the same laws like all other things. By noting how the Sun returns, the Moon returns, the seasons return, and plants are reborn - we discover how we are subject to the same fate: Birth-Life-Death-Rebirth.
The point of this is that, as the ancients said, there are only two possibilities for a human being; to be reborn as human or to be reborn as a Soul. With the term Soul, I intend to describe the subtle and invisible complex within human beings, and not just one part of it, which for the purposes of this discussion would be useless.
In Egypt the dead were embalmed and then awakened or caused to be reborn, with particular and energetic practices which coagulated the subtle remains of the deceased, in such a manner that his consciousness could rest upon it and thus live a sort of life beyond the grave.
And the Limbo, the Elysian fields, or Underworld, the Duat, etc. - This inner dimension of man is known by many names - but in any case it means always the one and the same thing.
The initiatic schools, have therefore long understood that the only key, be it to understand nature and therefore the entire universe, or be it to transform a human being, is precisely the perennial law of analogy.
Departing from here, we can observe an entire proliferation of rites and practices analogous to the cycles of time of the earth, the sun, the moon, or stars. This is to ensure that humankind enters into the great cosmic harmony that turns eternally, and thus evolves according a universal law, namely: In the universe things transform from for worse to better as well as from better to worse. In modern times, this is known as the Law of Thermodynamics. For our purposes, however, it is enough to know that this is Eternal Universal Law.
Mystery Schools and initiatic rites can not escape this general universal rule, and thus we find them again and again all across the world, coupled with the eternal laws of the birth of life, of death and of rebirth. Here in the West, we can observe this also in Christianity, the dominant religion of the day, but each initiatic order also has its own corpus of special initiatic doctrines and practices, which cause their disciples to advance along these lines. To this, there are no exceptions.
Thus we arrive at the Second Order of the Golden Dawn, the R.R. et A.C., which as already stated for the other orders, can not escape this rule as an expression of the eternal laws governing everything. In fact, upon initiation in the Neophyte grade of the Outer Order of the Golden Dawn, a new life begins for the candidate.
This entire new life unfolds for the initiate in the grades leading up to Philosophus. Next, the candidate encounters the mysteries of the Divine for the first time in the Portal of the Vault of the Adepts. This transitional grade essential for the incubation of the new Soul in preparation for the second initiatic ordeal - Death following the birth that constituted the first such ordeal as a Neophyte.
In the Adeptus Minor (5=6) ritual, in documents and practices furnished to me not by the R.R. et A.C., but rather by the R+C Order from which the R.R. et A.C. arises, the following is said, which is precise and incontrovertible:
"The Mystery School into which you have been initiated is not a school of mysticism, but rather a school of active Magic. In this order we study the Principles of Sacred Science from a scientific point of view, instead of from the mystical or emotional point of view of religions.
In this Mystery School which transmits the teachings of ancient Mystery Schools of Sumeria, Chaldea, Assyria and Egypt, you will find neither superstition nor obscurantism. We will reveal to you the true inner structure of human beings and their true relationship with the Universe: For this reason, disciple, be ready to follow the course in every phase and fear not the death you shall face..."
This is the grade corresponding to the Adeptus Minor (5=6) of the R.R. et A.C. in the Order, which shall remain unnamed, yet is the foundation and root of all Rosicrucian mysteries ever transmitted in the West
Next, in the ritual which is the source of the 6=5 in the R.R. et A.C., it is written:
"I have died - and now I voyage in unknown realms with my boat (an image of the Subtle Body). Although dead, I am and live in this endless sea, joyous in the knowledge that the body is not everything!
Now I know! Now I can meet my brothers and sisters and receive from them the power of contact with the things above and the things below ..."
For now I shall not dwell upon explaining these words, but shall return to them, once we have first examined the following from the ritual which was the source document for the Adeptus Exemptus (7=4) of the R.R. et A.C.:
"I know you Death - And yet I live! I am dead and I have been reborn. I have conquered death - and I rise like the sun on the horizon. My journey in the world beyond the tomb is accomplished - and now I return with the earth in blossom."
In this journey we may observe and note precisely what happens throughout the universe - and thus also the human beings on their journey towards regeneration.
In these three grades transmitted to the R.R. et A.C. by the mysterious Order from which the Rosicrucian impulse first arose, it is explained in the instructions to the Adept that this is not a path of mysticism and certainly not a path for many - that when we speak of death, you truly die - and that when we speak of journeying beyond the tomb - you truly travel - and when we speak of rebirth - you are truly reborn and not merely symbolically or metaphorically.
Inside of the human being who undergoes these initiations and performs these techniques, changes that occur are not merely mental, but also energetic, biological, and cellular.
Using techniques of Superior Magic of the Adeptus Major (6=5) grade, it becomes possible to have the same experiences as when you die, as all attest who have gone this way before. Once you are "dead" you find yourself in a place that is neither heaven nor earth. In this place, called "beyond the tomb,""dubat," etc., for the first time, you encounter your own complexes of the mind and of the Soul. No longer trapped in the physical body of the Adept, these now take on tangible, visible appearance. It is these which torture or delight the Soul.
If the mysteries of death are those of the Adeptus Minor, who sacrifices him or her-self scientifically, in order to transform into a different substance (as can be observed in any cabinet of chemistry or physics laboratory where matter is studied), then in the grade of Adeptus Major (6=5), consciousness is gained in the LITERAL sense."
The Major Adept encounters these Spirits, Angels, or Demons, meets these energies, gains consciousness of them, gets to know them there, and returns from "beyond the tomb" changed forever, as True Magic and its functions are revealed in subtle detail.
During the 6=5 initiation of an Adeptus Major, a special magical technique is employed, which LITERALLY detaches the soul of the candidate, separating it from the physical body, so that the Adept may have the literal experience of what actually happens when you die.
I understand there have been, and still remain, leaders of orders who have never had contact with the true R+C source. Based merely on their fantasy of the function of these rites, these individuals would nonetheless like to convince you that these sacred rituals and techniques are merely symbolical or mystical. I swear to you, however, that this is not so.
The three Adept rituals of the R.R. et A.C. are but one valid albeit late manifestation of earlier Rosicrucian rites that contain the knowledge of death, the knowledge of the universe beyond, and of rebirth and regeneration. These rites, which TOGETHER contain the requisite knowledge to become a TRUE Adept, are in reality but three degrees in one.
There have been orders that have already deviated these rites and there are others too today who would lead you even further astray. Some today write even that there is no magic beyond the Adeptus Minor (5=6) grade, and that the Major initiation of Rosicrucian Adepts, the Adeptus Major (6=5) is but a mystical appendage of the 5=6 - that there is no place in the 6=5 for advanced Rosicrucian magic, and that the 7=4 is but yet more mysticism.
Our august Order breaks its silence therefore today, so that the original essence of these essential Rosicrucian rites might not be lost merely to a thirst for innovation, led by a chorus of experts who, perhaps even meaning well, would nonetheless otherwise lead you astray.
In the tomb, in which the Major Adept is enclosed, there is all of his/her consciousness, and in the "world beyond the tomb," the consciousness of the Adept encounters the consciousness of Nature, once the consciousness of the Adept has been detached from its physical vehicle by 6=5 rites of Magic.
Once the Adept's consciousness has been magically detached from his or her physical body, he or she then confronts what the Adept knew or thought to be - with what is in reality, and thus can make a complete correction in the eyes of God. It is in the 6=5 grade of Adeptus Major, therefore, that contact can truly be stabilized with one's higher Self, Divine essence, or "Angel" (and not in the 5=6, as has been popularly misunderstood for over a century). It through the the contact that comes from the sojourn in the Underworld in the 6=5 grade, that, in addition to one's earthly guides, one who knows death gains also the guidance from one's Divine source.
The Major Adept knows death, yet the victory is not yet fully won. As the Hermetic adage states, "you must not only separate the volatile from the fixed. It must not only ascend to heaven, but it must also descend to Earth again empowered with the knowledge of superior and inferior things. Then the volatile must once again be reunited with the fixed. Only then will the Earth be reborn and regenerated, and the physical and magical powers of the Adept blossom like the flowers in Spring.
Far removed from all metaphor and mysticism, the LITERAL bath of the Adept in the Upper Astral realm, where resides that which does not live on Earth, reawakens the powers slumbering within the Adept. Thus, it is upon entering the 7=4 that the keys are bestowed of how to use these awakened powers for the common good, as well as to lead the Order. This is why the power to reconstitute the Order, if necessary, has at all times in history resided with Exempt Adepts, together with the Hermetic and Rosicrucian lineages of our Order, as is also the case with the Golden Dawn.
Magical and alchemical techniques are given in this grade that carry the Adept to triumph in his or her Opus Magnum (Great Work). Far from all metaphor and mysticism, these techniques are physical, observable, and have nothing to do with mysticism, obfuscation, or the sort of smoky theological arguments about these grades that have appeared in books and on the Internet of late.
The rest, or everything else that occurs later, can not be comprehended by those who have not yet reached such an advanced state of spiritual development, since the manner in which the human machine functions - and the Soul that inhabits it - are so different to that which we are accustomed to think and see, that it would appear to be but a fairy tale.
In this state, the Adept comes to understand the language of Nature, even to perceive and to comprehend the Universal movements of the Spheres. The Adept understands even life and death, living on the extreme peak of both. The Soul of the Adept is quiet and balanced - and nothing can shake this Soul - becoming what Agrippa called a Static Soul - a Soul tranquil, equilibrated, and no longer fluctuating.
Thus we witness the miracle of the trinity of grades of the true Rosicrucian Adept, the nature and purpose of which is totally different than what people had come to think and write of them today. Although to the outside, these initiations appear to be three grades, they are in reality but one deeply profound initiatic process, which fully develops the Soul of the Adept.
The Magi of the Order from which the Rosicrucian tradition first arose, including the R.R. et A.C., asked me to write this article, so that all may better understand the R.R. et A.C. and benefit from the true Rosicrucian manner in which the Second Order of the Golden Dawn has been intended all along.
Trusting fully in my disciple, Frater Lux ex Septentrionis, I accept that today, there is a need for diversity in the Golden Dawn orders. Nonetheless, there is a limit to what can or should be changed, and certain essential things should not be touched at all.
If the original R+C tradition is not to be lost completely in America and the English speaking world, it is even more important that at least some Golden Dawn orders remain not only faithful to the original Rosicrucian tradition, as does the Alpha et Omega - but faithful even to the dark and hidden roots from which the R+C rose first grew, and continues to nourish itself even until today.
Thus, in this strange, modern world of the Internet in which we live today - where one writer claims that "the higher R.R. et A.C. grades not magical, but rather mystical in nature" and another writes that "tradition must be sacrificed to intellect in order to achieve Gnosis..."
I am reminded of the words of Jesus the Christ who, according to the Johannite tradition, is reputed to have said:
"They are like the blind leading the blind!"

Adam Kadmon Griffin (1992-2014)
In Loving Memory

by David Griffin
It is my sad duty so share with you my profound heartbreak and that of our family. On Saturday night, July 12, 2014, my only son, Adam Kadmon Griffin, was tragically taken from us in a automobile accident.

Our family is devastated. I cancelled the tour I was on to come home yesterday to be with my wife Leslie, who was Adam's step-mother and Adam's faithful companion, Redd Dogg. Adam's bond with Redd, who Adam saved from the pound, was profound. I have seldom seen a young man invest so much time and affection in a dog as Adam did in Redd. As I write these words, Redd Dogg continues to to wait faithfully at the door for the return of his master. Redd sees our sadness and tries to comfort us. I think he is beginning to understand that Adam will not be coming back.

Adam Griffin and Redd Dogg

Adam's Mother and sister are on their way from Sweden to say farewell to him as well. We still have not made the funeral arrangements, but our family will gather here in Pahrump, Nevada to pay our final respects.

Adam was a fine young man, born in Stockholm, Sweden on February 1, 1992. I was there at his birth, which was a somewhat difficult one, performing a special magickal rite to welcome Adam Kadmon into our lives. Sadly, Adam's Mother and I divorced two years later, but I remained in Sweden nonetheless for many years to be near him and part of his life.

Last September, after working for several years as a gourmet chef, Adam decided to abandon Sweden and move permanently to America. We welcomed him in his new home here at Isis Temple with open arms. I did not pressure him at all to find work, for which I am quite grateful now that I see how little time we were actually to have together.

Adam spent the last 10 months of his earthly sojourn enjoying his life with us at home and being part of a nuclear family with my wife, Leslie, and me, a pleasure he had been denied as a child due to my untimely divorce. Over the years, Adam and Leslie developed a deep and special bond. Adam fully embraced Leslie as his step-mother and loved most just spending time with us doing simple things.

Adam loved to watch instructional and inspirational videos on YouTube, which he actually used to improve his life. He loved and worked with bodyweight training films and enjoyed sharing with us the best funny and prank videos he found. Adam's greatest joy was working in the kitchen preparing food, expecially together with Leslie. I must say that Adam improved my nutrition dramatically.

My greatest disappointment was that Adam was not interested in the Golden Dawn, so I was unable to share my Golden Dawn wisdom with him. This is not to say Adam was not a spiritual man. On the contrary, Adam was deeply spiritual, but his passion was for native American shamanism. He therefore studied a Shamanic path under the guidance of Leslie, who as cultural anthropologist once lived and worked on a Shoshone and Paiute reservation.

I did, however, have the pleasure to introduce Adam to our forefathers on the Inner Planes - with whom he is now together. For this I shall remain forever grateful.

Adam was present at MagickAll 2014, which the Alpha Omega hosted here in Pahrump, Nevada. Adam was curious about the different spiritual paths presented there, attended most of the lectures, and many of the rituals as well. Adam was an inspiration to all who met him.

The final day Adam spent on Earth was a happy one. Sadly, I was away on tour, but Adam spent the day cooking with Leslie, making travel plans for our family, and shopping for a new hat. In the evening he attended a pool party with his closest friends. As it turned out, this was his farewell party.

It would be far too difficult for Leslie to remain alone without Adam here in our home this Summer while I am on tour, yet we do not want to give away Adam's beloved companion, Redd Dogg.

We are therefore asking that someone on the West coast step forward who is willing to take care of Redd Dogg for us until my tour season finishes in October. Redd is a living memory of Adam and must be saved for our family despite Adam's untimely passing.

Leslie and I send our love to all of you, in this, our darkest hour.

The Golden Dawn, Critical Thinking, and MagickAll 2014

The Order of the Alpha Omega has spent the past several months encouraging its students to learn to think critically. They are taught, from the second lesson of the Order, how to evaluate issues, how to reach conclusions, how evaluate evidence, and how to challenge their own assumptions.

Our students are taught not to fear the unknown but to analyze it. Our goal is to learn that we may serve. Only the ignorant live in fear. Only love conquers fear. Part of that Love is the love ofwisdom (Philo-Sophia) or better known as philosophy. To attack what we do not understand is not wisdom, it is foolishness. It is the fallacy of the orthodoxy.

The MagicALL is an invitation to ALL forms of magick to come and explain their position and demonstrate their methods. Our open invitation is true. It is OPEN. How can we invite ALL and then say “everyone is invited as long as they do everything we like and agree with us.”

While we don’t begrudge those who wish to only meet with like-minded groups (we do it ourselves most of the time) we do believe that our community isbigger than ourselves and we can learn from ALL. Sometimes we learn what TO do and sometimes we learn what NOT to do.

We don’t fear other groups. We open our doors and are prepared to defend our methods. We are not afraid for our students to see other groups or traditions. We don’t fear they will abandon us for other traditions. If they do, we are happy we could help them find the path they need during this incarnation. We are not trying to capture or brainwash our members. We are trying to educate them. The best way to educate people on other traditions is to invite them to come out and present their arguments themselves.

The greatest enemy of knowing is assuming. Of course, we all make assumptions, and doing so is a requirement. However, assumptions are a starting point, not an ending point. We make assumptions and then we challenge them.

An assumption is something we accept as true without proof.Once we identify an assumption we hold it is our duty as students to find out if those assumptions are based in reality, to get proof. MagicAll is the opportunity to identify, clarify, and rectify our assumptions about other traditions. Don’t argue from a position of ignorance, do so from experience. You will get that experience at MagicAll.

Alpha Omega students can THINK. They know the method. We are very proud of their ability to think critically rather than be fooled by sophists. We feel comfortable exposing them to all traditions. Can every Golden Dawn order make this claim? Our members don’t memorize material, they master it.They don’t read our lessons, they analyze them. They don't do the exercises because it’s “tradition,” they do them because they work! This is why we have nothing to fear.

In the past two years our yearly Spring gathering has been for Golden Dawn Magicians ONLY. We invited people from all the different orders and they all declined. This year, we open it to ALL and these same other Golden Dawn leaders this time say they can’t show up because there are non-GD people doing Magick!

I say “Make up your mind!”

Even so, I wish they would come and see what it REALLY is that they demonize. I wish they would come and share their knowledge, their experience, and share their philosophies. We won’t try to “steal” their members and we don’t fear they will steal ours. Again, if our members hear their arguments and believe a different order is better suited for them at this time, we encourage them to go where they are spiritually comfortable. Nevertheless, to demonize us without knowing us from experience is poor taste when they have been invited to come and learn.

You can find more information on the MagickAll gathering here.

Adam Kadmon Griffin-Ljung (1992-2014)

.
For those who have not heard the tragic news, my only son, Adam Kadmon, lost his life in a automobile accident on Saturday, July 12. Our family remains devastated by his loss.

On behalf of Adam's family in both Sweden and the USA, I extend an open invitation to celebrate Adam's life with us at funeral services in Pahrump, Nevada on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at the Golden Dawn's Isis Temple at 2411 W. Cordova Pl., Pahrump, NV 89060. We will gather at 6:00 PM and funeral services begin at 7:00 PM, led by Alpha Omega High Priestess, Leslie McQuade. A pot luck dinner will follow.

I send heartfelt thanks to the many hundreds of you around the world who have sent our family condolences on Facebook Adam would have been deeply touched by this outpouring of love. To those who wish to send flowers, you may do so to the above address, but please be mindful that in the desert cut flowers wilt almost instantaneously, whereas potted plants are much more resilient.

Adam, a gourmet chef by trade, spent most of his life in Sweden, where a separate memorial service will be held for him in coming weeks. Adam touched and forever changed the lives of those he met, perhaps mainly because of the values he embodied. Adam loved the simple pleasures in life, and valued above all else personal honor, truthfulness, courage, and empathy. Adam could  smell a lie a mile away, and never hesitated to confront lies. His courage was exemplary.

Adam was a quintessential rebel - as typified by the tattoo he wore proudly across his chest:

"They told me to sit down.
I stood up."
- Adam Griffin

Adam Kadmon was a deeply spiritual man. I will write more about Adam's spirituality once our family's mourning has passed. He will be longed for by all who knew him, especially by his family in Sweden and in the USA, and by his faithful companion, Redd Dogg.

Farewell, my Son!
You are sorely missed.
In passing beyond the veil
And leaving behind your Earthly shell,
Your body has again become the entire universe.
For you have risen as your authentic, immortal Self ...
For you truly ARE ...
Adam Kadmon!

Lesson Two:

"As a Golden Dawn Magician,
what kind of problems do you try to solve?
What kinds of questions do you ask?"

Hermetic Magick and Alchemy arose in ancient Egypt and come to you across Centuries - passed down for Millennia from Hermetic Master to Disciple in an unbroken chain of Adepts.

The questions you ask as a Golden Dawn Magician are:
  • 1) How can I become more than human?
  • 2) What are the techniques or practices that can unchain my Divine Spark to fully emerge and manifest within me?
  • 3) How should I live and work internally to reach this objective?

As a consequence of these questions, the problems you must resolve as a Golden Dawn Magician are posed by the practice of true and ancient techniques provided by traditional initiatic science.

The first problem involves the reliability of methods, which have been tested over generations of previous practitioners. For example, Kerstin Johnson from Stockholm, Sweden recently wrote:
"Since working with Golden Dawn Magick, I've noticed a marked difference in my approach to common problems, increased patience, and a serious boost to my intuitive abilities."
A second problem as a Golden Dawn Magician you try to solve involves the ability to learn and practice ancient methods correctly rather than according to your own understanding, which can distort and negate their efficacy.

The third and most important problem you try to solve as a Golden Dawn Magician is how to develop your energetic body. To get the most out of Golden Dawn Magick, you must over time develop your energetic body, integrate it into daily life, and use it frequently, as you do your physical body. As you begin to feel the physically perceptible energy in your astral body grow and strengthen, you will ultimately gain physical confirmation you are on the right path in cultivating your energetic Soul.

Israel Regardie
In the late 1970's Israel Regardie, together with Cris Monnastre (his primary disciple) performed a long series of magickal rituals with the intention of causing a Golden Dawn resurgence. Considering the flourishing Golden Dawn today, this was clearly one of the most influential, successful magickal workings in modern history. Cris Monnastre, one of only two individuals ever initiated by Israel Regardie into the Golden Dawn's Inner Order, was my first initiator as well. When she decided to retire from the Golden Dawn in 1994, Cris Monnastre gifted all of Regardie's magickal tools to me personally, to empower me in leading the Golden Dawn into the 21st Century.

As important as Israel Regardie's personal magickal weapons are in and of themselves, the crown jewel of the Regardie collection is today not a magickal tool created by Regardie himself, but rather a Rose+Cross lamen gifted to Regardie by Alpha Omega Adept, Elsa Barker (1869–1954), a direct magical link to Golden Dawn founder, S.L. MacGregor Mathers.

Israel Regardie's Rose Cross Lamen
(Gifted to Regardie by MacGregor Mathers Envoy, Elsa Barker)

Elsa Barker
Elsa Barker was instrumental in bringing the Golden Dawn to America, as she frequently carried documents and messages back and forth between S.L. MacGregor Mathers in Paris and the Alpha Omega temples flourishing in America.

Barker was born in Leicester, Vermont and became an American novelist and poet. Barker lived most of her adult life in New York City. From 1910 to 1914, she lived in Paris, where she was initiated in S.L. MacGregor Mathers’ Rosicrucian Order of Alpha et Omega. As Barker frequently traveled between Paris and the USA, Elsa Barker became MacGregor Mathers’ emissary to the American temples of the A.O.

S.L. Macgregor Mathers
The minute book of Mathers' Ahathoor temple mentions that, on July 3, 1911, just prior to Elsa Barker’s return to the USA, Mathers had received applications from 9 members to form yet another new temple, Neith Temple No. 10 in America.

Barker produced through automatic writing the scripts for Letters from a Living Dead Man (1914), War Letters from the Living Dead Man (1915), and Last Letters from a Living Dead Man (1919). These remarkable communications attracted much attention in England, where they were first published. At the time the scripts were produced, Elsa Barker was new to automatic writing, and was also unaware that the communicator (subsequently identified as David P. Hatch, a Los Angeles lawyer), who signed the communications "X," had passed away. These letters record the impressions of an intelligent traveler in a strange country, his mistakes, prejudices, ideals, and new insights.

Elsa Barker's other publications include The Son of Mary Bethel (1909), The Frozen Grail & Other Poems (1910), Stories from the New Testament for Children (1911), The Body of Love (1912), Fielding Sargent (1922), The Cobra Candlestick (1928), The C.I.D. of Dexter Drake (1929), and The Redman Cave Murder (1930). Barker died August 31, 1954.

Her rose-cross remains today a crown jewel in Mather's Rosicrucian Order of Alpha et Omega, and our outer order, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. At all official Inner Order functions, it is with great pride that I wear at all Golden Dawn Inner Order functions.

Lesson Seven:
"What viewpoint is fostered ...
by the Golden Dawn System of Magic?"

The viewpoint fostered through the Golden Dawn system of Magic is that Divinity slumbers within every woman and every man, and that an influx of light, given first from the initiations then from the practices, can reawaken a new life with operative reality rather than merely based on faith.

The viewpoint of the GD Magical system is that every woman and every man can reach this objective in that they possess all of the necessary requisites to arrive at their eternal aspect. Last but not least, the GD Magical system raises human dignity through cooperation with divine intelligences commonly referred to as Angels, etc., re-granting the magician his or her their original dignity lost in the descent into gross matter, losing thereby the memory and sense of his or her true nature.

Personal Temples: A Powerful Message From an Anonymous Golden Dawn Brother

Imperator David Griffin

When two years ago the European headquartered Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn® decided to encourage people to construct their own personal Temples to practice Golden Dawn Magick, our "Personal Temples" initiative was greeted by a mixed response. There were of course, nay sayers, who proclaimed that the whole thing was a waste of time and there would never be 1,000 new personal temples. The nay sayers had completely missed the point though. The whole reason for encouraging folks to create their own personal Temple was to foster the growth of the practice of Golden Dawn Magick.

Two years later, evern though we still have not reached our goal of putting 1,000 new personal temples on the map, we have nonetheless achieved this objective. The response by our readers has been overwhelming. All in all, many people around the world have lauded this initiative, and we have been swamped by people wanting to publish photos of their temple here on the Golden Dawn Blog.

May 1,000 Points of Light burn ever brighter, as the Magic of Light illuminates more and more people around the globe!

Help us light Temple Fires ...
... of the Magic of Light ...
... all across the globe!

When I received the below email and photo last night from Frater D.D.T.C., I was moved to tears by his message to the Magickal community. There is nothing really I can think of to add to such a simple yet powerful message. Here is what Frater D.D.T.C. has to say:
"I am a previous intiate of an anonymous G.D. temple, and now work solely as a solitary magician with a passion for the arcane philosophy as found in the Golden Dawn tradition of magic...
... I dedicate this altar to the 1,000 Points Initiative in the high, but still possible, hope that we may all see eye to eye as magicians and conquer the desire for disagreement between orders as well as rites. Let us rather take joy in our differences as we honor our matriarchs and patriarchs with the perpetuation of devotion to the ways of magic."
       - Frater D.D.T.C.
The Personal Altar of Frater D.D.T.C.

Personal Temple Fires Are Lighting ...
... All Across the World!

Thank you for sharing, Brother!

The Personal Temples initiative is just one small way the European headquartered Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn is striving to serve the needs of the greater Magickal community. If you can think of other ways for us to help, please do let us know! Even the idea for the marvelous Personal Temples initiative came from one of our readers.

We are here to aid in meeting the needs of your magical practice. If you would like to put your personal temple on the map or publish photos of your personal temple here on the Golden Dawn blog, please contact us HERE.

Astromusik and the Golden Dawn

Ezra Sanzer-Bell
author of

ASTROMUSIK is an art project that draws from an Ancient Greek lineage of thought called the Harmony of the Spheres. The author speculates about the influence of Western Astrology, Alchemy, and Kabbalah upon the development of techniques common to Western music and tonal harmony. The book describes a composition technique developed by the author, called Tone Color Alchemy, that borrows from inner teachings of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and Paul Foster Case of the B.O.T.A.

In the book, the author describes a technical method for the translation of words, tarot cards, and astrological charts into musical sequences called "musical seed sigils". These seeds become the basis of the songwriter's composition process, without dictating any laws of voice leading or harmony. The Tone Color Alchemy technique allows a high degree of creative freedom, while at the same time introducing opportunities for the integration of a magical process never before featured in the printed medium. This book is recommended for anyone interested in bridging their understanding of the Western Hermetic Mystery tradition with music.

Ezra Sandzer-Bell - Star Spangled Banner Presentation - July 3rd 2014

Shortly after the release of Astromusik, I was invited to give a presentation at Portland’s New Renaissance Bookstore on July 3rd 2014 to promote the book. The proximity of this event to Independence Day seemed like a perfect opportunity to explore the musical history of the Star Spangled Banner. I had a strong intuitive sense that the song’s music and lyrics might connect in some way to the concepts I had put forth in Astromusik. A tapestry of coincidental data emerged during my research, which I have summarized here as an introduction to this new book.

The Star Spangled Banner became the United States National Anthem in 3/3/31 under the presidency of 31st president Herbert Hoover. Alaska and Hawaii had not yet been brought under the Union, so the country held only 48 state territories and the flag featured only 48 stars. The flag itself existed precisely one day and one year shy of 48 years, from July 4th 1912 to July 3rd 1959.

1948 was the year that NASA sent the first Rhesus monkey into space, linking this date with our country’s space program and the idea of travelling to the stars. Furthermore, the Alexandrian astronomer Ptolemy wrote around 150 AD that there were 48 total constellations in the sky, a classical worldview that survived for over a thousand years following his publication of his major book of knowledge, called the Amalgest.

This version of the Star Spangled Banner features chords and melodic notation without lyrical accompaniment. It is divided into two sections: Section A features 24 notes with a repeat section, totaling 48 notes, while Section B features 48 notes and no repeat. I was excited when I first discovered it, because I imagined it to be correlated to the 48 star flag, each musical note representing a state in the Union or a constellation in Ptolemy’s system.

On closer inspection, I realized that the fourth bar of section A was not entirely accurate. In keeping with the traditional lyrics of the song, the final G note should be notated as two eighth notes rather than a quarter-note, as in the first two words of the lyrics “What so proudly we hailed”. The same issue came up in the second section, measure 12, where once again the G note is written as a quarter note where it should be two eighth-notes, in “O’er theland of the free”.

However, upon closer inspection, I discovered that this was not an error at all, but rather an allusion to the original melody by John Stafford Smith.

National Anthem: “Dawn’s early light what so proudly we hailed”
Anacreontic Song: “Fat in full glee, A few songs of harmony”
Two syllables of “what so” were originally the single syllable word “A”.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Anthem: “Banner yet wave o’er the land of the free and the home of the brave”
Anacreontic Song: “Me to intwine the myrtle of Venus with Bacchus’s Vine”
Two syllables of “o’er the” were originally the single syllable word “The”.

What you see here are two excerpts from the original sheet music and lyrics of the Anacreontic song, written by John Stafford Smith during the mid 1760’s as a theme the Anacreontic Society. Based in London, the society was a popular gentleman’s club where amateur musicians of the upper class came together and shared their music. Among their members was Joseph Haydn, a known friend of Mozart’s.

America’s national anthem thus has its roots in a drinking song devoted to Venus and Bacchus, goddess of beauty and god of intoxication. Historical records are not clear on precisely when J.S. Smith wrote the song. but given its placement in the “mid 1760’s”, it is totally possible that the song would have been written in 1766, in which case the song would have been composed 48 years prior to the lyrics of the Star Spangled Banner, written by Francis Scott Key in September of 1814. This is of course speculation, but it highlights the recurrence of these “roughly 48” synchronicities, such as the 47 year length of the 48 star flag, the 49 note version of the star spangled melody, NASA’s launching of the second Rhesus monkey into space on June 1949, and so forth.

Featured to the left is literally F.S. Key’s signature, a fantastic musical pun given the nature of this speculative musical endeavor. Musicians will recognize that the bass and treble clef are traditionally called the F Clef and S Clef: The two dots of bass clef center on the line attributed to the musical note F, while the S clef is merely shaped like the letter S. These clefs let a musician know what key signature they are in. Together they are called the “grand staff”.

The bass and treble clefs represent the lowest and highest possible vibrations of the piano’s tonal spectrum. In this way, they could be said to represent the full spectrum of light, from the total absence of light (blackness) at the very lowest note to the pure totality of light (white radiance) at the highest note. This is symbolized on the piano by the low note of A and the high note of C.

In conventional music theory terminology, C major is called the “natural major key” and A minor is called the “natural minor key”. They are called natural because they have no sharps or flats. In other words, when a piece of music is written on the grand staff without sharps or flats, it is automatically understood that it is in C major or A minor. These two keys are called “relative keys” because they are composed of the same notes, the only difference between them being the starting point. C major starts on the C note (CDEFGABC) and A minor starts on the A note (ABCDEFGA).
The solfeggio scale - Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Ti Do - is a major scale.

As I describe with some detail in my first book, major and minor keys are the most basic musical structures. Each has a quality distinct from the other. In Astromusik I classify Major as Solar and Minor as Lunar.

To recap, J.S. Smith writes “The Myrtle of Venus with Bacchus’sVine” in Anacreontic Song’s chorus, which later became F.S. Key’s melodic foundation for the Star Spangled Banner. The melody is composed of approximately 48 notes.

A previous article I wrote for PDX Magazine highlighted the resonance of J.S. Bach and his 48-songmasterpiece, WTC books 1 and 2, with the New York City World Trade Center buildings 1 and 2. The September 11th attacks were a monumental stage of America’s history, igniting the same kind of patriotism that inspired Key initially, complete with planes harkening back to the “rocket’s red glare” and the explosions of the towers to the “bombs bursting in air”.

As the two central pillars of commerce in New York City, WTC1 and WTC2 were like tuning forks directing the country’s cash flow. Synchromystic literature has explored in excruciating detail how the buildings were intended to represent the freemasonic pillars of Jachin and Boaz, which originally stood at the gate of the temple of Solomon. These masonic pillars of Darkness and Light found there way into music via the bass and treble clefs.

Q: How many Freemasons does it take to screw in a light bulb?
A: It’s a Secret!

Freemasonry’s first Grand Lodge was established in London in 1717. 171 years later, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn was founded and opened their Isis-Urania temple, also in London. These two groups have proven to be the most influential and relevant Western hermetic societies to emerge during my research into esoteric musical symbolism. The relevance of the Hermetic Golden Dawn material is covered in detail throughout my last book.

Although J.S. Bach was not openly affiliated with Freemasonry, many have speculated that he was a student of the Western mysteries. Among the techniques allegedly used by Bach are:

Cryptogram: The translation of German words into numbers by way of gematria. A=1, B=2, C=3, H=8 etc. so that BACH = 2+1+3+8 = 14.

Number Symbolism: Cross-reference of these numbers with other words of the same numerical value, especially with reference to biblical passages, magic squares, astronomical, and geometric principles.

Interval and Rhythm: Application of these sacred numbers melody and harmony, or else rhythmic measurements like duration, repetition, variation, and so forth.

The Bach family crest features his initials JSB in mirror image, superimposed, and topped with a seven-pointed crown, possibly representing the seven-note scale. Also the Bach Motif, a cryptogram spelled from the letters of his name, could be written with a single note at the cross-section of four musical staves due to the German use of “H” to signify the B note and “B” for the note B flat.

In 1717, Bach was appointed the role of kappelmeister (chapel-master) at Prince Leopold’scastle in Kothen. That year he composed the Brandenburg concertos, often held to be the greatest orchestral compositions of his career. Just a few years after J.S. Bach’s death, Mozart was born. He rose through the first three degrees of the Freemasonry and earned the title of Master Mason in 1785, while still in his late 20s. That same year his father, Leopold Mozart, was also initiated into the craft.

Mozart went on to write a number of pieces openly devoted to the craft. Entire books have been written on Freemasonic symbolism encoded into his famous opera, The Magic Flute. Conspiracy theorists will have a field day when they realize that Mozart was a close personal associate of Adam Weishaupt, founder of the Bavarian Illuminati. Classical music scholar Katherine Thomson addresses the historical evidence for this in her book, Mozart and Freemasonry.

According to the Harvard Dictionary of Music, Freemasonry was the formal organization under which the informal Anacreontic society formed. It would appear that the Masonic lodge was utilized for serious business, while the Anacreontic society served as a more casual gentlemen’s club, where aristocrats could party, drink, and share their creative musical projects.

Freemasonry certainly played a central role in the founding of our country. The first president of the United States, George Washington, was a Freemason of the highest degree, as were nine of the men responsible for signing the Declaration of Independence in 1776. That same year, on the other side of the ocean, Mozart was busy in Salzburg composing his breakthrough piano piece, the E-Flat Concerto (K. 271). This means that the birth of America coincided with the rise of equal tempered Classical music in Western culture.

Rumors have circulated about J.S. Smith belonged to the Inverness Masonic Lodge #4 in London. If that were the case, we could say with total confidence that the National Anthem was originally a Masonic melody, not to mention an invocation of pre-Christian deities (Bacchus and Venus).

Aside from the codes of secrecy, major political influence, and centuries old roster of elitist criminal sociopaths, Freemasonry has taken a lot of flack from Christian fundamentalists for their sympathy with Lucifer. Believed by most Christians be synonymous with the Devil, Lucifer is said to have cast judgment upon God and fallen from grace as a result. He is the angel associated with the sin of pride.

Freemasonic Luciferianism has two sides to it. On the one hand, it represents a political and ideological split from the church, allowing for the revised code of ethics. The Scientific illuminists of Freemasonry interpret Lucifer as humanity’s acquisition of scientific knowledge as superior to blind faith in Church dogma.

The myth of Lucifer has a second, more mystical aspect however. Known also as the Morning Star, Lucifer is described throughout Freemasonic literature, among countless other sources, as a symbol of the planet Venus. The most basic interpretation of this attribution has to do with the rising of Venus in the morning, prior to the sun. Just as dawn is about to break, this bright planet draws up over the horizon and offers a taste of the illumination to come. When the sun itself emerges, then it is said that the “true son” has risen. Thus the Luciferian sin of pride, when interpreted astrotheologically, is an allegory of Venus, the “morning star” who is in fact only a planet.

Here we see three symbols. On the left is a Rosicrucian symbol of the Rose and the Cross. In the center is the Venusian pentagram, and on the right is an ordinary, phi-ratio pentacle. The three of these symbols work symbiotically.

If we could hover above the disc of our solar system and watch the planets turn, we would see the sun at the center and the planets turning around it in elliptical patterns. However, if we were to hover above the earth so that it appeared to be at the center of the system, with the sun and planets rotating around it, we would witness an entirely different set of geometric patterns playing out.

Viewed from the geocentric, birds-eye perspective the Venusian pentagram is formed by Venus as it turns around the Earth, The five innermost points mark the moments when Venus comes closest to the Earth and forms an inferior conjunction with the sun. One full Earth cycle around the sun requires 365.256 days, whereas Venus has an orbital length of 224.701 days. Astronomers discovered that the ratio between Earth and Venus was remarkably close to 8:13. Every 8 Earth years, Venus goes around the sun 13.004 times.

The symbol of the rose cross alludes to the top-down geocentric perspective, with the cross representing Earth and the rose representing Venus. The pentacle becomes a symbol for Venus as well. Given its derivation from the geocentric model, the pentacle has also become a symbol for Earth. In the tarot for example, the suit of coins features a pentacle design and signifies the Earth element. Pentagrams have been traditionally associated with pagan ritual magic, benevolent when turned upright and Satanic/Demonic when inverted.

I discovered that the early name for sheet music was pentagramma, from the Italian word meaning “five lettered”. This refers to the five lines of the staff, each representing one musical letter. Between these lines are the letters FACE. One could speculate that this correlates to the face of Baphomet, the goat-headed nature deity whose face is often depicted within the inverted pentagram. The Devil card of the tarot features a variation on this theme, with an inverted pentagram stamped upon the creature’s forehead.

But more importantly, I discovered the application of the Venus and the Sun to the Western musical scale. This did not emerge in time for the release of ASTROMUSIK, which is why the material is featured here instead.

The twelve-tone scale is a measurement of solar time on Earth. It corresponds to the twelve months in a year as well as the twelve hours of day and twelve hours of night in a 24-hour period. This much I knew. However, upon studying the pentagram of Venus, I realized that the eight white keys, including root and octave, represent one Earth year each. The five black keys correspond to the additional five orbital cycles made by Venus in its own journey around the sun. Therefore, these 13 notes represent the relationship between Earth and Venus as they journey together around the sun.

Jupiter is the fifth planet from the sun and the largest planet in our solar system. It requires approximately twelve earth years to complete its cycle (11.86 to be precise). The twelve-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac is based on the orbit of Jupiter, which they call the “year star”. Interestingly, ancient Chinese culture was the first to derive the 12-note musical scale, based on the cycle of fifths.

The 88-note keyboard corresponds to the 88 day cycle of Mercury around the sun. In Greek mythology there is a story of Mercurius falling in love with Aphrodite (Venus) and longing for her affection. Jove (Jupiter) took pity on Mercurius, and while Aphrodite was bathing in the river, Jove stole one of her sandals. He sent the sandal to Mercury by way of an eagle, so that Aphrodite would come looking for it and the two would be brought together. His plan worked, Mercurius and Aphrodite fell in love, and together the created a child, the divine hermaphrodite (Hermes-Aphrodite).

Aphrodite’s sandal symbolizes her relationship to the Earth, or in musical terms, the 13-note scale of root-to-octave. This pattern must repeat a number of times to reach the 88-note scale of mercury. Jupiter makes this possible, symbolically, because of what the orbital resonance of its major moons. Orbital resonance is an astronomical term that implies the relationship between two orbiting bodies exerting a consistent gravitational influence upon each other, due to the length of their orbit existing in a ratio that approximates two small, whole numbers.

In music, the doubling or halving of a sound frequency creates an octave. If a musical tone is vibrating at 432 cycles per second, then its higher octave would vibrate at precisely 864 cycles per second, in a perfect ratio of 1:2.
The orbital frequencies of the three large, inner moons of Jupiter exist in an almost perfect harmonic ratio of 1:2:4. Herein lies the principle of the doubled octave, representing the means by which the 13-note Venusian scale replicates itself to produce multiple octaves and eventually achieve union with Hermes-88.

Aphrodite’s bath in the river resonates with imagery found in the Star card of the tarot’s major arcana. Traditionally, the Star card features a barefoot woman, naked and kneeling into a pond with one foot on the earth and one in the water. In each hand she holds a pitcher filled with water, one of which she pours out onto the ground and the other into the pond. Above her head are seven small stars and one large star. In the Golden Dawn / BOTA attributions, this card is associated with the constellation of Aquarius, the water bearer.

Author and well known occultist Kenneth Grant wrote about this card, stating that “The STAR is the Key to the Aeon of Horus as it represents Sirius, the star of Isis, the Mother of Horus, who is the son of this god, and the sun or father of our solar system.” In other words, Grant attributes the kneeling woman of the Star card to the Egyptian goddess Isis, mother of Horus, who is in turn is the deified representative of our physical sun. The large star above her head represents the Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky.

In ancient Egypt, the river Nile would flood every year with the heliacal rising of Sirius, initiating what the Ancient Greeks and Romans called the “Dog days of summer”. Heliacal rising means that the star rises in conjunction with the sun. Coincidentally, these were the hottest days of the year, and according to mythology it was the spiritual intensity of Isis and Horus in union (Mother and Child) that generated this heat. They were called the dog days of summer because of the larger constellation to which Sirius belonged: Canis Major (Canis: Canine).

The Dog Days begin on July 4th and thus tie back in to this study of the US National Anthem, where the 8 stars in each row of the 48-star American flag relate to the eight stars featured the Star card, representing the eight notes of a musical scale with octave included. Canis major could be abbreviated C Major, which is the very key that the national anthem is written in. The sun and Sirius would be root and octave.

Canis Major is positioned next to Canis Minor, corresponding to the parallel musical keys of C major and C minor respectively. These two dog-themed constellations are accompanied by the well-known constellation of Orion, the hunter. His three-starred belt was represented by the three wise men in the story of the birth of Jesus Christ, while the “star in the east” refers to Sirius.

The rising of Orion’s Belt along the horizon coincided with the Winter solstice, that time of year when the sun is at its very lowest point in the sky, and from which it once again rises, symbolized by the birth of Christ (our local sun).

The three-starred belt of Orion connects to the musical idea of a chord being built upon three notes, the C major and C minor triads representing Orion’s hunting dogs.  The eight stars of Canis Major are featured in the tarot’s Star card. Through the Isis/Horus myth, initiates came to understand that our sun was in fact a star, just like its “mother”, Sirius. Some people have taken these teachings literally and believe that the sophistication of ancient Egyptian culture was due to a direct transference of knowledge between conscious beings existing in the Sirius star system and our own early human ancestors.

The twin star system of Sirius could be interpreted as a correlate to the musical concept of relative keys, Sirius A playing the central pivot point (“solar” center) around which Sirius B orbits (“lunar” satellite). The two scales C major and A minor are composed of the same notes but with a different center of gravity, both in the key of “Canis Major”, if you will. Note their 50.1 year orbital period.

Presently, there are 50 stars on the United States Flag and 52 states in the union. Just as the 48 star flag has been linked to the idea of 48-note melodies in the national anthem, so too the 52 states can be connected to the 52 white keys on a piano. Where the 88 total notes on a piano correlate to the 88-day orbit of mercury, these 52 white keys could be set to the 52 weeks in a year on Earth, reinforcing the notion that music is a symbol of time organized according to harmonic ideals.

The other 36 notes on the piano fall on the black keys. Coincidentally, the Star Spangled Banner full under Title 36of United States Federal Law:

301: National Anthem - Star Spangled Banner, J.S. Smith and F.S. Key
302: Includes American Motto: In God We Trust (1956: Eisenhower)
303: Rose as Floral Emblem of the Country (1986: Reagan)
304: National March - Stars and Stripes Forever, by John Philip Sousa
305: National Tree: The Oak
The national anthem is grouped with four other codes of law, one of which is Sousa’s National March, the military anthem of our country. The pairing of these two songs and the American motto (In Dogs We Trust) with the symbols of Rose and Oak tree could be viewed as a hermetic riddle. The rose as a national emblem connects to the idea of the Venusian Rose and the Rosicrucian fraternity out of which Freemasonry emerged prior to the founding of America. In ASTROMUSIK I explore the rose as a Kabbalistic allusion to the 22-letter Hebrew alphabet and the Tree of Life, as detailed in the Sepher Yetzirah.

When You Wish Upon A Star…

In Celtic mythology, the Tree of Life is attributed to Dagda the Oak tree. From the wood of the oak comes the uaithne, an Irish word meaning sacred harp. The oak harp has also been called Coir Cethar Chuin, meaning Four Angled Music. According to legend, Dagda played the harp during times of peace. As he strummed its strings, conditions in nature would respond accordingly, giving rise to the four seasons of Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. It follows that the Kabbalistic seed of life corresponds to the acorn, out of which the Tree of Life is born. Each year, the acorns fall from the tree and fertilize the earth, preparing for new life the following spring.

Freemasonry incorporated the Celtic Oak myths into their initiatory rites at Oak Island, a small landmass in Nova Scotia. Here they conducted the Secret Vault ritual, introducing brothers to the mysteries of death and Eternal Life.

This relates to the ritual of oak and mistletoe, described by Pliny the Elder during the 1st century AD, as the most sacred of all plants in the druidic culture. Mistletoe, like the music of Dagda, was said to restore fertility to the infertile and was the antidote to all poisons. The gathering of these plants was carefully timed with moon cycles and other celestial patterns.

Mistletoe found its way into American culture via Christmas, the one time of year when indigenous shamanic practices are revived, even if cloaked in the language of Christianity. What’s with the star at the peak of the tree? People hang mistletoe in doorframes and are encouraged to kiss their sweethearts under the plant for good luck. Dagda’s musical harp and its role in moving the seasons connects back in to the image of Sirius, making its appearance during both seasonal polarities, being conjunct with our sun the Dog Days (July 4th) and signaling the rebirth of the sun during Winter Solstice (December 22nd).
“In the olden days, when children wished upon the stars, there lived a king whose daughters were all very beautiful. But the youngest was so radiant that the very sun, who had seen much indeed in her time, was filled with amazement every time she looked down upon the girl” - The Frog Prince, Grimm’s Fairy Tales
Brian Wilson, lead songwriter of the Beach Boys, wrote his first song when he was 19 years old. This catchy surf ballad was called “Surfer Girl” and took the world by storm, reaching 7th place in the U.S. Billboards Top 100 in 1963. According to Wilson, the song was inspired by a version of “When You Wish Upon A Star” performed by Dion and the Belmonts, a popular American vocal group from the late 50’s. Wilson had changed the original melody slightly but kept their 6/8 rhythm and utilized the same rich vocal harmonic techniques.

The first version of “When You Wish Upon a Star” was co-written by Harline and Washington, featured during the credits of Walt Disney’s 1940 film Pinocchio. It was later voted 7th place in the 100 Greatest Songs in film historyby the American Film Institute. Some countries have adapted the song for their Christmas media specials, putting the song in a context that suggests attribution to the Star of Bethlehem (Sirius) that revealed the birth of Christ (sun).

“When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are. Anything your heart desires will come to you. If your heart is in a dream, no request is too extreme, when you wish upon a star as Dreamers do

Popular rock and roll songwriter Roy Orbison, made famous for his songs “Oh, Pretty Woman” and “Only the Lonely”, released another major hit in 1963 called “In Dreams”. The song, just like Surfer Girl and When You Wish Upon a Star, peaked at number 7 in the US Billboard Top 100, spending a total of 13 weeks on the charts. In an interview, Roy explained that the song’s melody had come to him during a dream, as many of his songs did.
“A candy-colored clown they call the sandman tiptoes to my room every night just to sprinkle stardust and to whisper, go to sleep, everything is all right. I close my eyes then I drift away into the magic night. I softly say a silent prayer like dreamers do.”
Whereas Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys had adapted the rhythm, vocal style, and melodic contour from “When You Wish Upon A Star” to achieve seventh rank in the Billboard Top 100, Roy Orbison borrowed the closing line from the song’s chorus “As Dreamers Do”, changing the word as to “like”, achieving the very same rank on the pop charts.

The sandman had already appeared in American pop music almost a decade previously, when Pat Ballard wrote the song “Mister Sandman” and gave it to the Chordettes to perform. Their version of the song reached #1 on the Billboard US Charts and dozens of recording artists have since performed it.

The Sandman was a major character in Northern European folklore for centuries. Hans Christian Andersen wrote a version of the story in 1841 that described the Sandman sneaking into the room of children at night and sprinkle sand in their eyes so they couldn’t see him. Then he would blow on the back of their neck until they fill into a trance. The sandman came with two umbrellas, and when the child slept he would climb upon their bodies, taking out an umbrella and spinning it above their head. For the good children, he brought out an umbrella covered with images on the inside, to induce dream experiences. Above the heads of the bad children, he would spin an umbrella that had no imagery at all, and they would fall asleep without dreaming any dreams.

“Mister Sandman, I’m so alone. Don’t have nobody to call my own.

Please turn on your magic beam, Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream.“

Our Personal Temples initiative continues to bear much fruit. Every week we help more and more Magicians put their temple on the map, who in turn inspire others to create their own personal temple.

May 1,000 Points of Light burn ever brighter, as the Magic of Light illuminates more and more people around the globe!

Help us light Temple Fires ...
... of the Magic of Light ...
... all across the globe!

Here is what J. Dicax from Tennessee has to say:
"I have been practicing magick for about 4 years and studying it much longer. It hasn't been an easy journey not having any teachers to guide me. So I spent the last four years grabbing from here and from there, not following any established route or attaching myself to a certain current.
I would say I have achieved a basic level of success in my work, but I also feel never attaching myself to a current or experiencing the elemental initiations has really held me back spiritually. So here I go back to square one, to do things right. Here is a pic of some of the tools I made for my Neophyte Self-Initiation. If I can do it, anyone can! And if you are going to attach yourself to a current, in my opinion, there is no other option - The Golden Dawn is the way to go...I hope this inspires others to do the same thing and everyone enjoys the picture."

Occult writer Aaron Leitch today on Facebook wrote:

"Perhaps one could be a mystic without being a magician but I see no possible way for a real magician to not also be a mystic." -Aaron Leitch

Despite my having clarified the traditional Hermetic distinction between Magick and Mysticism in numerous previous articles, there nonetheless remains tragic confusion among aspiring Magicians about differences between traditional  Magick and Mysticism.

As long as leaders of our community use the terms "Mysticism" and "Magick" with newly invented definitions, we should not be surprised by confusion among aspiring Magicians. Since Mr. Leitch does not define what he means by either Magick or Mysticism, it is impossible to say what his statement actually intends. Taken at face value, I respect Mr. Leitch's position, even though it is fundamentally different than my own.

Mysticism and Magick traditionally represent two distinct spiritual paths - diametrically opposed in both methods and goals - according to definitions used for Centuries by the Hermetic and Magical traditions, including by luminaries such as Giordano Bruno, Marcilio Ficino, Cornelius Agrippa, Gerolamo Cardano, Pietro D'Abano, Theophrastus Paracelsus, and Eliphas Levi (not to mention the entirety of Egyptian, Chaldeaen, and Sumerian Magick).

All science grows in three main phases. These are (1) a common vocabulary, (2) correlation, and (3) effect-cause-effect. This means that every known science began by first establishing a common vocabulary that permitted its proponents to communicate. Without a clear definition of each term, conversations end up turning into arguments even when both sides are actually proclaiming the same truths.

Aristotle was quite adamant that we must always begin by clarifying our terms. Unfortunately, when important terms and concepts, such as “Magick” and “Mysticism” are used with imprecision, we end up fighting about something that isn’t really important.

Mr. Leitch's statement does make sense if one creatively redefines Mysticism as merely a synonym for "Gnosis" or "spiritual realisation." As we shall see below, however, the spiritual methodology used by traditional Mysticsm is diametrically opposed to traditional methods of Golden Dawn Magick.

Is Mr. Leitch's apparent redefinition of Mysticism as merely Gnosis accidental or is it deliberate? There exist two well defined factions in today's Golden Dawn community. On the one hand, you have traditional Magickal orders. On the other hand, you have SRIA (Sociatas Rosicruciana) led Golden Dawn orders like Mr. Leitch's. SRIA in turn argues that the Rosicrucian tradition should be exclusively for Christians and has revived the schismatic G.D. order of A.E. Waite, who eliminated Golden Dawn Magick completely in favor of Christian Mysticism.

Immediately following the 1903 schism, William Butler Yeats wrote an article entitled "Is the Golden Dawn to remain a Magical order?"  Ever since, a chasm has emerged between those in the Golden Dawn community who gravitate more towards the spiritual methods of Christian Mysticism and those who gravitate more towards traditional Hermetic Magick. This has created fundamental differences between one Golden Dawn order and the other, which endure in our community even until today.

The foremost exponent of the Magical path in the Golden Dawn was the great Mage, S.L. MacGregor Mathers, who correctly understood Golden Dawn Hermeticism as a Magical rather than Mystical tradition. Over time, the Magical spiritual path has become more and more pronounced in the Magickal faction of the Golden Dawn community like our order, the European headquartered, Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn®.

A.E. Waite
The foremost exponent of the Mystical Golden Dawn faction was Arthur Edward Waite, who rebelled against Mathers in the 1903 schism to create his Fellowship of the Rosy Cross. Waite completely replaced Golden Dawn Magick with Christian Mysticism. The polarity between Mystical Golden orders and traditional Magickal ones remains entrenched in our community even until today.

The primary difference between Magick and Mysticism lies codified in the actual methods of practice, together with the Mystical or Magical inclinations of the practitioner.

The Mystical path refers to the capacity and will of the practitioner to place oneself in a passive position in relationship to eternal Being and the forces of nature, which the Practitioner begins to invoke and pray to, so they may manifest and enlighten one, thus spiritually uplifting and exalting the practitioner.

The Magical practitioner, on the other hand, does not place him or herself in a passive state towards natural and Divine forces, but rather in a positive state. Recognizing the Divine Spark inside oneself, the practitioner actively collaborates with Eternal Being rather than waiting for its manifestations.

In Mysticism, the practitioner expects Divinity to manifest itself, and to ascend the staircase that leads from below to on high aided by the Divine hand that takes us and leads us ever upwards.

Magic does not expect this, instead conquering the Inner Planes through one's own effort rather than through Divine aid. Thus, whereas the Mystical approach is one of submission, the Magician instead is a conqueror.

A perfect example of the Magical path may be found in the Mithraic Ritual deposited in Paris, which shows one such practice of divine Ascension of the Magical initiate. While rising towards Divinity to be received like a prodigal Son or Daughter, the practitioner greets the Gods as equals that gradually appear, not fearing them or subjugating oneself before them, but admonishing them and blandishing them with Magical words that open the gates of heaven.

Whereas Magick is based on knowledge, Mysticism is based on on ignorance in the literal sense of "ignoring" or "unknowing." In fact, one of the most important mystical texts in all of Christianity, The Cloud of Unknowing, speaks of making oneself obscure, humble and ignorant before the unmanifest - to remain there, in silence, gradually emptying oneself, while waiting for something or someone (God) to come and fill the void thus created.

Thus two completely different modalities become evident. Whereas the Mystic reflects the Divine light that is poured out upon him, the Magician generates this light, becoming an emitter himself.

I fully support diversity in our community. There is nothing wrong with Mystical Golden Dawn orders. There are many people, after all, who are more suited for the methods of traditional Mysticism than of Magick. For such aspirants, a Mystical Golden Dawn order could be a good choice.

Any misrepresentation of methods from traditional Mysticism as Magick is unethical. Golden Dawn Magick has its own, excellent spiritual methods. When it comes to something as important as people's spiritual development, they deserve informed choices based on reliable information. It is not fair to promise aspirants Magick, then deliver Mysticism instead.

Whereas Mystical Golden Dawn orders are a welcome addition to our community, they need to be honest and transparent about the spiritual methods they actually teach. Here at the European headquartered Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn®, we will always remain a Magickal order. Our entire mission is to make Magicians.

I am not saying we are the "best" Golden Dawn order - only that there are important differences.

excerpts from his
The Complete Golden Dawn Initiate

The general theme of perfecting the Self in the western hermetic tradition of Qabalah was inherited from the renaissance in Judaic philosophy brought about by the teachings of Isaac Luria. His concept of Hitlabshut or the enclothement of higher dimensional souls in lower dimensional vessels transformed the earlier static hierarchy model of Qabalah evolved in Northern Spain and the Languedoc region of Southern France since the 12th Century.

Isaac Luria Tree of Life
Luria articulated the ‘mechanics’ of the role of Messiah in the scheme of the Divine Creation, viewing the entire universal cosmic drama as a vibrant dynamic, aimed towards the redemption of an exiled Shekhina, or divine presence.

Luria considered each individual as having a cosmic role in the restoration of the Creation to what might be considered its pre fall from Eden state. The biblical Fall was symbolic of a shattering of God’s original perfect Creation and Luria envisioned the consequent reconfiguration of the sephirothic schemata as a paradigm in which the activity of divine consciousness seeks liberation from the forms in which it has become cloaked.

In addition to this quite novel focus, Luria’s philosophical teachings yielded new interpretations of the Zohar: The Book of Splendour. All this impressed the intellectual Samuel (MacGregor) Mathers who, with the scholastic assistance of Crown Coroner, Dr William Wynn Westcott, had produced a partial translation of the Zohar.  Mathers and Westcott essentially shaped the GD, despite arguments over the order’s murky origins in pseudo Freemasonic mystique.

Golden Dawn Tree of Life
The influence of Westcott underlies many of the subtleties in the Golden Dawn’s understanding of the dynamics of the Qabalistic scheme of the Tree of Life and the Four Worlds in which it is held to be manifest.  Westcott had a classical education and was the founder of the Adelphi Lodge of the Theosophical Society in London.  He translated and commented upon a number of important Qabalistic source works, the Sepher Yetzirah, or Book of Formation, being the most esteemed.

In this work, his presentation of the Yetzirahtic Texts of the Thirty Two Paths provides a link to some ancient meditative descriptions of the Tree of Life.

Westcott’s Sepher Yetzirah formed the basis of the Golden Dawn’s underlying cosmology, although the body of Hermetic works which had grown out of the Renaissance also contributed to its library.

Between 1871 and the time of Mather’s death in 1917, the revolutions in all fields of Science demonstrated notable phenomena affecting both religion and philosophy.  This involved an understanding of Relativity Theory, research into evolutionary biology and the practical mysteries of radioactivity and X-rays. In many ways, the mind-set of the world’s population was being transformed by the new paradigms.

SL MacGregor Mathers
The static hierarchical models of the Qabalah schools of 12th Century Europe, sourced by Westcott and Mathers, were still fodder for those who remained rooted in archaic models; but some embraced the new revolutionary thinking.

Crowley was commenting upon relativity in his sumptuous journal, The Equinox, during the first decade of the Twentieth Century and even made references to Quantum Theory in his book accompanying the Book of Thoth Tarot deck.

Violet Firth, writing as Dion Fortune, was in correspondence with Crowley and had been trained in the Alpha and Omega lodge of the GD, headed by Mather’s widow Moina – the sister of French philosopher Henri Bergson. Fortune authored the classic ‘Mystical Qabalah’ in the 1930s which is still considered by some to be of merit today. Kenneth Grant, one of Crowley’s prestigious students wrote of a meeting between Crowley and Fortune in Hastings, prior to the old mage’s demise.  Apparently the two got along famously, despite the snooty disapproval of Fortune’s associates in Magic.

Aleister Crowley
Whilst, retaining the core of the Golden Dawn schemata, Dion Fortune supplements her thesis with much theosophical material derived from Blavatsky and the monumentally laborious works of Alice Bailey.  In an earlier detailed, and somewhat more convoluted, investigation of Qabalistic lore, The Cosmic Doctrine, she conveys something of the Lurian dynamic without getting bogged down in any form of historical narrative. The next great leap forward in the understanding of the Hermetic Qabalah was greatly-dependent upon the scholarship of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, after the historic upheaval of the Second World War.

Gershom Scholem
The erudite Hebrew scholar Gershom Scholem has ‘named and shamed’ the school of Aleister Crowley’s system of Qabalah as unsatisfactory and there is little reason to elicit that he was not referring to the whole Golden Dawn school of Qabalah, as we have come to know it, through the works of IsraelRegardie and others.  Similarly, there is little empathy from Scholem with fellow Hebrew University Professor, Martin Buber’s, more existentialist interpretation of Qabalah.

Scholem’s dismissal of Golden Dawn school Qabalah is prejudiced by a religious ethnocentricity.  The Order’s approach to 12th Century classical lore involved techniques of gnostic illuminism quite authentic to these historical roots.

Gershom Scholem was a scholastic commentator upon the Messianic Qabalah of Isaac Luria.  Particularly upon the impact of these teaching upon the rational and irrational forces vibrant within Judaic historical culture.  Scholem saw the Messianic movement of the 1660s spearheaded by Sabbatai Zevi as a historical consequence of the Lurianic Qabalah.

Sabbatai Zevi presented himself as the Jewish Messiah during the reign of the Ottoman Turks.  Converts to his claims to messiah status spanned the Judaic professional classes as far West as the City of London, as followers gave away their possessions and broke ancient religious taboos in anticipation of the immediate end of the world. Zevi performed a last minute conversion to Islam, astonishing and confusing the entire world.

Martiin Buber
The writings of Buber and Scholem helped to inform the development of post traditional GD Qabalah research in an era when an explosion of publishing in Tarot and esoteric hermetics was at its peak.  So, too, was the post Behavioural arena of Psychology, where functional schools of the discipline were now evolving with great sophistication.

From the work of Freud, to the systems of Jung, Adler and Wilhelm Reich, new architectures of the Mind were amassed to provide fresh models of human perception and mental representation.

As these insights came to the attention of the layman, the public became more conversant with notions of the Conscious and Unconscious Mind, theSubConscious, the Ego and the Id.  So these concepts became integrated with models of the Tree of Life published during and after the 1960s.

Qabalistic theory embraces every system it meets. As psychology progressed into a unique Cognitive school, and science evolved through Chaos Theory into Supersymmetry and String Theory, so has the rich polymath of the Qabalah flourished.

The very latest conundrums of M Theory physics present the mathematics of the universe as an entity similar to a virtual reality. This would be of little surprise to the traditional Qabalist, who would simply point out the design of the Tree in the Four worlds (Atziluth – Nearness, B’riah – Creativity, Yetzirah – Formation and Assiah – Activity) as a dynamic of the sentience of the Deity underlying our noumenal world.

Scientific enquiry into the nature of Light, in the form of the Double-Slit experiment, has taught us much about the role of the observer in natural phenomena. Indeed, the whole of observed reality seems to be an equivocal agreement between the lowest common denominators of our perceptive faculties and wildly dynamic forces of the universe acting upon us.

Despite the ancient adage, ‘As above, so below’, the minutely microscopic behaves according to completely different rules and probabilities than the forces and energies of the macroscopic world.  This is what distinguishes Newtonian Physics from Quantum Theory.  Where the former yields logical equations, describing graduating mathematical formulas between forms and energies, Quantum Theory can only deal with probable descriptions and possibilities.

What ‘makes sense’ when dealing with the behaviour of matter and energy on the one hand cannot be applied to the realm of the microscopic. On the level of sub-atomic energies, huge velocities of energy and levels of atomic gravity apply which would crush us to a single point if they were applied at the human scale.

The true nature of the world we experience – The World of Assiah or Activity – must be infinitely far richer than that which our sensory apparatus allows a glimpse of.  This richness belongs to the Formative and Creative worlds of Briah and Yetzirah, classified in GD system as the realm of the Archangelic and the Angelic respectively.

On these formative and creative levels the Tree of Life determines the balance between order and chaos within which the mechanism of our fields of experience may function. This algorithmic agreement between background forces is only now becoming detectable by mathematical description. Anything approaching a summation valid to our phenomenological logic could be as misleading as Newtonian theory applied to the Quantum level.

Communication within a neuron is electrical and near light speed, whilst that between neurons is chemical and suspiciously slow.  Thought itself is present at a level where micro-gravities are immense and Space and Time are distorted at such sub atomic levels. In the Sepher Yetzirah, Time itself is described as having two dimensions. This alludes to the internal time measured by the Mind and to the notion of time by the clock. It is both experience and duration at one and the same moment.

Inexplicable apparitions reported since biblical times, and perhaps even unidentified flying object sightings, can perhaps be understood when regarded as cognitive dissonance against the background of spatial and temporal relativity.

In the realm of Assiah or Activity, the Sephiroth of the GD Tree of Life are referred to what are known as the Planetary Intelligences.  In essence, these represent the qualities of human sentience. In the highest of the Four Worlds the Tree of Life in Atziluth, or Nearness, is closest to the most ideal representation of the ultimate state of reality.

The Tree in this realm is truly beyond the comprehension of the phenomenal mind.  The values of its cohesion exist in the mind of the Creator alone.

According to the Hermetic precept ‘as above, so below’ conscious human thought is held to be the reflection of that of the Divine.  But thought itself is not purely an ethereal activity, for it is bound up with our concepts of perception and representation. Also, there are contributory factors to consider regarding thought, such as signal input from our nervous and glandular system.

The study of the concept of consciousness as a Tour de Force, something greater than the sum of its parts, cannot ignore the role of the parts. The classifications afforded by the schemata of the Tree of Life provide ample means by which we may map the partial faculties of the intellect and the emotions combined within us. Thus we may come to learn the full potential of the Self.

On the level of thought alone, the physics of biology implies that a widely variant dynamic might apply to understanding the construct which our computational mind presents as our reality - a dynamic which may be highly dependent upon the limitations of our perception.

As a philosophical model, a kind of scientific ‘thought experiment’, the concept of Qabalah has evolved through the continental school of Eliphas Levi, Papus and that of the Golden Dawn to incorporate quite revolutionary concepts. Despite the disapproval of Gershom Scholem, this recently-engineered reworking of the traditional systems of Qabalah has been studied in at least one post graduate initiative in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

The Golden Dawn tradition is therefore not only still vibrant, but ever changing and becoming more sophisticated in the minds of those touched by its influence.

Jon Kato wrote today on the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn (AΩ) Facebook Group:
"Illustrious Brother David Griffin: Many years ago I had a copy of your famous book, the Ritual Magick Manual, and I noticed something curious about that book. The book was exactly "666" pages long! What magickal role does the number "666" play in the HOGD scheme of the Universe?"
Dear John,

There have been plenty of rumors have floated around about the 666 pages in my Ritual Magick Manual over the past 15 years since the Golden Dawn first published it. Believe it or not, you are the first person ever to ask me this question in print.

I am a Magician first and a writer second and the Ritual Magic Manual is not just a book. It is also a consecrated astrological talisman, loaded with the energies of both the Sun and of Venus.

666

Magick Squares called Kameoth are central to Golden Dawn Planetary Magick. The Kamea of the Sun begins with the number 6.  On the tree of life, the sphere of Tiphareth (number 6) is associated with the Sun. The Magick Square of the Sun is a grid with 6 rows and six columns of squares = 36 cells.

The numbers arranged in the grid are the numbers from 1 to 36. The numbers of each row, column, and diagonal add up to 111 in any direction, The total value of the sum of all these numbers together equals 666, the number of the Planetary Seal of the Sun, which touches all 36 squares when overlayed on the Kamea. Thus we see that the number of pages in my Ritual Magick Manual, 666, corresponds directly to the Planetary Seal of the Sun, the first of the Seven Seals of Golden Dawn Planetary Magick.
Kamea and Planetary Seal of the Sun
The Opening of the 7 Seals

What I am about to say will come as revelation even to many seasoned Magicians. We have seen that in Golden Dawn Magick the number 666 is related to the first of 7 Seals of the Kameoth.  What most Magicians do not understand, however, is that The Magick Squares as published by Agrippa and Regardie are only of limited Magickal value. This is because the Magick Squares, in reality, are Sealed (encrypted) in their published form.

The Seven Seals are decryption keys. In order for the Magick Squares of the Kameoth to manifest their true power, the 7 Seals must first be opened and the squares decrypted. The opening of the 7 Seals involves transposition of certain squares encoded in each Seal to open the 7 Magick Squares

Once the 7 Seals have been broken through decryption, the Magic Squares of the Kameoth reveal the names of the secret planetary angels that unleash their full power. The Opening of the Seven Seals of the Kameoth, and the invocation of their angels, remains oath bound and practised in our Second Order, the R.R. et A.C. until today.

Let us next consider that on the Kamea of Venus there are 49 squares.
The sum of the numbers in any row, column, or diagonal is 175. The sum of all numbers in all squares 1225. Thus the significant numbers of the Kamea of Venus are 49, 175, and 1225. The original price of the Ritual Magic Manual is equal to the number of squares on the Kamea of Venus = 49

On the reverse of the Ritual Magick Manual you will find a complete Solar Talisman and a talisman of Venus on the front cover. In addition to the work I did consecrating these tallismans, the Ritual Magic manual itself is talismanic, with significant Kameothic numbers of both Venus and the Sun intrinsically woven into its fabric.

My magickal (Solar) intention in creating the Ritual Magic Manual was to provide a spiritual impulse for humanity's solar ascension through putting Magickal technology in the hands of our people in a format anyone can use.

This remains my mission and my life's passion until today. This is why, for you and others like you, I recently created Magick 101on GoldenDawn.TV.

Secret "HIT LIST" of Spiritual Leaders EXPOSED!

by David Griffin
When my Son, Adam, tragically lost his life in a fatal car accident last July, I couldn't believe the sick rumors that my on-line attackers were secretly, perversely rejoicing and celebrating my Son's death.
Adam Kadmon Griffin (1992-2014
But when author David Mattichak recently passed away, these same covert defamation operatives openly gloated and mocked Mattichak's death on the secret Facebook group where they routinely gather and conspire. Sickeningly, the evidence above shows that even when challenged, the gloating continued!
R.I.P. David Mattachik
Services will be held Feb. 2, 2015
Noteworthy, together with other targets they name elsewhere, are names on their now published  HIT LIST of targets:
  • Rowan Pendragon
  • David Mattichik
  • Stephen Ashe
  • Frater Barrabbas
  • Frater ATLV
  • Starhawk
  • EA Koetting
  • Kevin Carlyon
  • Elish De Avalon
  • Lizzy Rose
  • She' D' Montford
  • Leslie Grififn
  • David Griffin
Other members of the "secret group" that published the target list, include Aaron Leitch, leaders of his order and even the Imperatrix of SRIA (America). The group admin is, unsurprisingly, Peregrin Wildoak.

Are people who conspire in dark corners that publish TARGET LISTS, and who secretly gloat over the death of others really the sort of people YOU should trust with YOUR spiritual development?

PREDICTION: The conspirators will now go on an attack rampage accusing me of "attacking them" for exposing the evidence below.

Even immediately after my Son passed away, these people kept attacking me on-line as if nothing had happened. Instead of showing even a crumb of compassion, the attackers instead put up a website showing only one side ot the 20 year old flame war and deceitfully claiming: "There is no GD war. There is only one lunatic, David Griffin, attacking the entire Golden Dawn community."

For crying out loud. My entire family's hearts are still bleeding with grief, yet Nick Farrell's entire Facebook entourage continues to defame me and try to blame it on me as if nothing had happened?!?!?!?!?

Our hearts are STILL TODAY devastated with grief over our loss of Adam, yet these people publish my remaining family's names today on a secret TARGET LIST?

For crying out loud. Enough is enough. This is a new low, even for them.

UPDATE: I was just informed that one of the people on the above target list, Lizzy Rose: "had her house shot at while her son's were sleeping in it and also her front hedge was burned down."
